Why Fabric Knowledge Matters
Not all sleepwear fabrics are created equal, and knowing how to care for each one keeps your pieces looking and feeling new for years. Here's a breakdown of the most common nightwear fabrics and how to treat them.
Silk
Silk is prized for its softness and temperature-regulating properties, but it's also the most delicate. Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, or use a mesh bag on a cold, delicate machine cycle. Always air dry away from direct sunlight, and avoid wringing.
Cotton
Cotton is the most forgiving fabric and can generally be machine washed in cool to warm water. Tumble dry on low or line dry to prevent shrinkage. Cotton softens with wash and wear, making it a reliable everyday choice.
Satin
Satin can be made from silk, polyester or a blend, so always check the label. Most satin blends do well with a cold, gentle machine cycle inside a wash bag, followed by air drying. Avoid high heat, which can dull the fabric's signature sheen.
General Care Tips
Whatever the fabric, washing nightwear separately from rougher fabrics like denim helps prevent snags and pilling. Storing pieces folded rather than hung on thin hangers also helps maintain their shape over time.
